July 2010
We hope this short note finds you well and enjoying all the blessing of being a child of God. The summer is coming to an end and classes will soon resume at Sunset. Some students arrived in Lubbock early in July but most will make their way here during the last few weeks and days. Classes actually begin on August 9th, but the faculty and staff will begin our schedule on August 5th.
Our summer has been a busy one, with family and work. Jon and Yvonne sold their home earlier in the year and were waiting to finalize the purchase of another home, so they and the two boys moved in with us. We spent a good part of the Fourth of July weekend helping them get the new house ready by painting, cleaning and other general repairs, Then it was time to actually move from our home to theirs. It is a very cute home in the older Tech Terrace area of Lubbock.
Many of you knew that Avery Miller was living with us too. Last year, Avery was in the middle of the visa and immigration process and needed a place to live for a month or two. Avery is originally from Jamaica, but she has been living in America for over 18 years. She works with Marge and I at Sunset. Well, that few months turned into staying for more than one year. Avery finally secured her resident visa status and was able to find an apartment in July. We really enjoyed her company but we know she is now enjoying her own little “domicile”. So we had the opportunity to hone our packing and moving skills in July.
I was invited to preach in Abernathy on the 11th and I guess it went well enough that they asked me back again. The following weekend we traveled to Tyler, Texas to visit with the Shiloh Road Church of Christ. Brad and Leah Barton are dear friends we met in Abilene and they now live in Tyler. Saturday morning the men met for breakfast and prayer and it was a wonderful way to begin the day. That Sunday I presented the morning sermon and then had the opportunity to share information about our ministry during the combined Bible class. We sincerely enjoyed being with the Christian family at Shiloh Road.
We have begun making travel plans for this fall. I have been invited to teach a seminar series on Basic Theology in Donetsk, Ukraine. It will be great to be back at the Ukrainiain Bible Institute once again and see so many of our friends. The school is also planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the official registration for the Institute. I was honored that they asked Marge and I to be their guest for the celebration. In 1999 and 2000 we worked for many months and made several trips to the capital city of Kiev to meet with officials and obtain the registration. As a result, UBI is now the only nationally registered religious training center for the Churches of Christ in Ukraine.
We will depart for Donetsk on September 1st making a short stop in Paris, France. We are thrilled to have Laura Ashlock from Abilene going with us. Sunset has been associated with the Paris congregation for several years. I plan to spend a good deal of time with the local missionary, Roland Mohsen, planning ways that Sunset can assist him in evangelistic outreach efforts among immigrant communities in Paris.
We sincerely appreciate your prayers and your partnership in our ministry,
Doug & Marge Reeves
